Analyzing the Past – Designing the Future: From Multimedia via Hypermedia to the user as ‘virtual co-curator’

In his half-day pre-conference workshop Hypermedia-Designer, System Analyst and Media Scientist Harald Kraemer will give a basis how the functions, contents, and forms of Multimedia Classics can be analyzed and why this analysis is a powerful tool for the creation and design of Hypermedia applications. Based on his current research project 'Multimedia Classics – Hypermedia Hermeneutics' he will demonstrate some strategies how to create tools to support the creation of real User Generated Content.
For more than twenty years, online and offline applications of hypermedia technology have combined text, image, video, animation, and sound into a 'total work of art' (Gesamtkunstwerk). Multimedia silver disc classics tend to get lost. Therefore criteria for their archiving and analysis have to be defined. But hypermedia is so diverse that it is in need of documentation, analysis, and methodology in a wider sense. Understanding how to analyze those intra-active Multimedia Classics is a base to understand how we can design effective Apps as well as common real interactive applications. In future the user will become a co-author, a co-curator, who will narrate his/her own interactive narrations based on his/her favorite artefacts as well as on the experiences he/she has made in the museum. So the storylines as well as the offer of content to the user have to change. The museum as a virtual institute will discover again the visions and virtues of the museum of the late 1960ies and early 1970ies, when artists like Joseph Beuys or Marcel Broodthaers have demanded the "participatory museum visitor". How can we support these needs now? One of the consequences for the museum will be to act like an open content provider and help to coach the process of creativity of their users. In the workshop we will rediscover the museum philosophy of some 1960ies artists, analyze possible solutions given by most unknown Multimedia Classics and discuss therefore some scenarios for the future.
